Pro Tips: Navigating Multigenerational Professionalism as a Student and Beyond

With the growing number of generations in the workplace, there is a need for students who may not have the same work experiences, life events, or values as employers/preceptors/faculty/prospective employers to learn common expectations of a professional and self-identify when it is necessary to clarify expectations or communicate values. Pharmacists have expectations of professional behavior for student pharmacists. However, many fail to define/communicate those expectations. These issues can be exacerbated in multigenerational settings when preceptors and students may have different lived experiences shaping their perceptions of professionalism.
