Dr. Michelle McCarthy graduated from Mercer University and completed University of Pittsburgh's ASHP-accredited drug information residency. She practiced two years at Samford University School of Pharmacy (SOP) then 24 years at University of Virginia (UVa) Health. At UVA, she served as the pharmacy education coordinator and residency program director for the PGY1-pharmacy (2007-2021) and PGY2-drug information (1998-2017) programs. Under her leadership, UVA's PGY1 pharmacy residency was awarded ASHP Foundation’s 2015 Residency Expansion Grant and 2017 Residency Excellence Program Award. She was also residency coordinator for UVA’s 11 other pharmacy residency programs, Director of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) SOP/ UVA, and previously managed the drug information/medication use policy service, P&T Committee, infusion pumps, investigational drug service, and benign hematology and infectious diseases pharmacy teams. Dr. McCarthy’s awards include 1997 Samford SOP Teacher of the Year, 2003 Virginia Society of Health-System Pharmacists Pharmacist of the Year, 2008 Louis P. Jeffrey Preceptor of the Year, 2015 Distinguished Drug Information Practitioner by American College of Clinical Pharmacy DI PRN, 2018 VCU SOP Office of Experiential Education Outstanding Service Award, and 2019 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Master Preceptor. She served on the ASHP Commission on Credentialing from 2008-2013 and was Chair in 2012. From 2018-2021, she was a contract lead surveyor. In 2021, she transitioned to full-time in ASHP Accreditation Services and works remotely from Charlottesville, VA.
