Pharmacy Specialist – Pain Management

Virginia L. Ghafoor, Pharm.D., MBA, is a pain management specialist with over 30 years of experience since obtaining her pharmacy degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. After pharmacy school, Dr. Ghafoor completed a post-doctoral fellowship in oncology and pain management at the University of Wisconsin. In 2017, Dr. Ghafoor obtained a Master of Business Administration degree from New England College. Dr. Ghafoor is currently employed as a pharmacy specialist in pain management at the University of Minnesota Medical Center (UMMC). She is also an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Pharmaceutics at the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy.
Dr. Ghafoor is a leader in developing pharmacy services for acute and chronic pain management at UMMC and throughout the MHealth Fairview system. Dr. Ghafoor serves as the Chair for the MHealth Fairview System Pain Committee to advance evidence-based practice for pain management. She is currently participating in research affiliated with the National Institute of Drug Abuse to develop a model for hospital-based treatment of opioid use disorder for patients who have major medical illnesses. Dr. Ghafoor has authored articles and book chapters on pain topics, including chronic pain, intrathecal pumps, palliative sedation, opioid stewardship, and patient-controlled analgesia.
