Stephanie Benson, MD, FAAFP, is Associate Professor at West Virginia University School of Medicine and Faculty at the West Virginia University Dept. of Family Medicine Residency Program in Morgantown, West Virginia. She practices full scope Family Medicine including outpatient primary care, inpatient medicine, obstetrics, and palliative medicine. She received her medical education at West Virginia University School of Medicine. She completed Family Medicine residency at the Southern New Mexico Family Medicine Residency Program in Las Cruces, New Mexico, a Faculty Development Fellowship at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and a Master of Science in Principles and Practice of Hospice and Palliative Care from the University of Maryland-Baltimore. Prior to transitioning back to WV in 2022, she was the founding medical director of the interprofessional Palliative Care Team at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces, NM and an Associate Medical Director for two hospice agencies. She has an extensive background in federal and state advocacy efforts and is currently developing a fellowship in healthcare policy. She is past President of the NM chapter and current officer and Co-Chair of the Legislative Affairs Committee for the WV chapter of the AAFP. She is a past Chair of the AAFP Commission on Federal and State Policy, and was awarded Family Physician of the Year for the state of NM by the NMAFP in 2016 and 2020.
