Solid Organ Transplant Pharmacy Specialist

Dr. Idris Yakubu, PharmD, BCTXP is a solid organ transplant pharmacy specialist and the PGY-2 solid organ transplant pharmacy residency program director at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System. He is also an assistant clinical professor at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy and an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. He earned both his Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Thereafter, he completed his PGY-1 pharmacy practice residency at the University of Toledo Medical Center and a PGY-2 solid organ transplant pharmacy residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
His practice areas include management of abdominal (kidney, liver, pancreas) and advanced heart failure/transplant recipients in the acute and ambulatory care settings. He has contributed to multiple peer-reviewed publications, and his research interests include; expanding the donor pool with the use of hepatitis C infected donor organs into hepatitis C negative recipients and immunosuppression minimization strategies in solid organ transplant recipients.
Dr. Yakubu is a member of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists, the American Society of Transplantation, and serves on the organ donation advocacy work group. He also serves as a member of the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Renal Disease Council, appointed by Governor Youngkin.
