Dr. Miriam Purnell is a Professor, Department Chair of Pharmacy Practice and Administration, and Program Director for the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Rural Health Disparities & Social Inequities at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) School of Pharmacy. Prior to joining UMES, Dr. Purnell worked in the pharmaceutical industry for over 12 years. She joined UMES as a founding faculty member and Drug Information Center Director in 2009. Dr. Purnell served as Assistant Dean of Student Affairs before being named Interim Chair of Pharmacy Practice and Administration in August 2017 and permanent Chair in January 2019. Her teaching and scholarly interests include drug information, evidence-based medicine, DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion), and predictors of student/faculty success, including impostor phenomenon. Dr. Purnell received the 2022 University System of Maryland Board of Regents Faculty Award for Excellence in Mentoring. She earned her B.S. and Doctor of Pharmacy from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. Dr. Purnell also completed a Drug Information Residency with the Janssen Research Foundation (Titusville, NJ) and the American Academy of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Academic Leaders Fellowship program. She is a member of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, the Maryland Pharmacist Association, and the Christian Pharmacist Fellowship International. Dr. Purnell is fluent in Haitian Creole and enjoys volunteering in activities that provide support to underserved communities.
