As CPO, Daniels oversees the health system’s pharmacy service line, including inpatient, clinic-based, ambulatory, and transitional care and specialty pharmacy and home infusion services. He has held leadership positions in stakeholder initiatives that support the 340B Drug Pricing Program and testified before Congress about the program’s importance.
His research interests include pharmacoeconomics, medication systems, medication use quality, and technology-focused improvements in medication safety and patient care. His research and editorial writings on these and other topics have been published in more than a dozen pharmacy and medical journals, including AJHP. He has served on the editorial boards of AJHP, the Journal of Managed Care Pharmacy, and Oncology Spectrums, and he is a former contributor to International Pharmaceutical Abstracts.
Daniels earned a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the University of Arizona in 1975 and completed a pharmacy residency at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD, before earning a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota in 1978 and a PhD in social and administrative pharmacy in 1981. In 1980, Daniels joined the faculty and hospital leadership team at the University of Minnesota. He remained on the university faculty until 1995, rising to the position of senior associate director of pharmacy at the University of Minnesota Medical Center.
In 1995, Daniels returned to the NIH Clinical Center to serve as chief pharmacist, a position he held until he taking the leadership position at UCSD in 2004.
Daniels has led and participated in numerous ASHP councils, committees, and initiatives. He is the 2021–2023 chair of the ASHP International Accreditation Commission and past chair of the Commission on Credentialing and the Pharmacy Technician Accreditation Council. He was named an ASHP Fellow in 1993 and is the 2014 recipient of the John W. Webb Lecture Award.
His other notable accomplishments include election to membership as foreign correspondent for the French Academie Nationale de Pharmacie and serving as a visiting faculty member at several international medical centers.
