Training Coordinator of Technical Operations, Division of Pharmacy
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
Roman, a past member of ASHP’s Pharmacy Technician Forum Executive Committee, is a longtime proponent and advocate for elevating the role of pharmacy technicians through training opportunities, career ladders, and engagement with local, state, and national stakeholders and policymakers.
Roman joined the MSKCC staff in 2012 as a pharmacy technician to help the hospital’s investigational drug protocol team and, 3 years later, was promoted to training coordinator of technical operations. In this role, he facilitated the training of all newly hired pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to ensure compliance with institutional sterile compounding requirements, hazardous materials handling, and other policies and procedures, including those related to accreditation with the Joint Commission. This past January, he became the principal trainer for the organization’s Epic Willow inpatient and ambulatory pharmacy management system.
Roman began his career in 2002 as a pharmacy clerk and technician for Eckerd Pharmacy and Walgreens in New York. He then moved on to hospital pharmacy, working as a part-time technician at New York–Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and studying for his undergraduate degree. He received a BA degree in psychology from The City College of New York in 2010.
While at New York–Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, Roman was a floater pharmacy technician working in all pharmacy satellite areas. He volunteered to lead the implementation of a pharmacy automation system to help assist in project management and train the pharmacy and nursing staff on how to use the system and new workflows.
His nonwork endeavors include cofounding and serving as chief operating office for 2 Newark, NJ, businesses, 1 of which he described as a “Sharespace and incubator that is devoted to helping multicultural women, men, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community develop and grow their businesses in a dedicate safe space.”
