Assistant Deputy Chief Consultant, Clinical Pharmacy Practice and Policy
U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
Groppi began her career as a VA pharmacist in 1997, practicing in Florida, and she has held agency leadership positions in the state and nationally. In 2011, she transitioned her career to the VA Central Office in Washington, DC, as the national pharmacist program manager for clinical pharmacy practice, policy, and standards. She was promoted to assistant deputy chief consultant for clinical pharmacy practice and policy in 2020 and recently served on a detail assignment as the deputy assistant under secretary for health in the Office of Patient Care Services.
Among her many accomplishments, Groppi has been a principal architect of VA initiatives that drive the widespread deployment of clinical pharmacist practitioners (CPPs) throughout the department. Her leadership has supported the development of a credentialing and privileging system that allows qualified CPPs to provide direct patient care to veterans with a wide range of clinical and behavioral health needs. This work is regarded as a model for optimizing advanced pharmacy practices in the public and private sectors.
Groppi was an elected member of the ASHP Board of Directors from 2018–2021. She is a past chair of ASHP’s Council on Pharmacy Practice and has served on many ASHP councils, workgroups, and advisory bodies. In 2020, Groppi and her colleagues at the VA Clinical Pharmacy Practice Office and Pharmacy Residency Program Office received the ASHP Award of Excellence. Groppi was named an ASHP Fellow in 2016.
Her other major honors include the Florida Society of Health-System Pharmacists Distinguished Service Award (2019), the Under Secretary for Health PBM Innovation Award (2015), and the South Florida Federal Employee of the Year (2010).
Groppi received her PharmD degree from Mercer University in 1997 and completed a primary care specialty pharmacy residency at the North Florida/South Georgia VA Medical Center in 1998.
