Woods has been the clinical coordinator and pharmacy residency program director at Saint Luke’s Hospital since 1985. Throughout his career, he has been a leader in clinical services, practice model development and implementation, formulary management, medication stewardship, human resources management, staff development, mentoring, research, and strategic planning. He is responsible for implementing effective professional development and training programs for students, interns, residents, and preceptors, with a recent focus on layered learning models.
His written work has appeared in AJHP and other pharmacy and healthcare journals, covering topics that include drug therapy, antimicrobial use, medication safety, and pharmacy practice. He has been an invited speaker on pharmacy topics at state, national, and international venues.
Woods received a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the University of Kansas in 1981, worked for 2 years as a staff pharmacist at Saint Luke’s, and continued his pharmacy education at the University of Nebraska, earning a PharmD degree in 1984. He completed a clinical pharmacy residency program at the University of California at San Francisco in 1985 before returning to St. Luke’s.
He has been active in his state pharmacy associations and is a past president of the Kansas Society of Health-System Pharmacists (KSHP, 1990) and the Missouri Society of Health-System Pharmacists (1997). His state honors include the KSHP Hospital Pharmacist of the Year (1994), Research Award (2011), Legacy Award (2015), and Missouri Health-System Pharmacist of the Year (1999) . Woods served a term as ASHP president in 2004–2005 and has participated in many ASHP councils, committees, and initiatives. He was named an ASHP Fellow in 1995.
In 2016, Woods received the Food and Drug Administration Advisory Committee Service Award. The award recognized his work as an appointed member of the agency’s Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee (2011–2013) and as a special temporary member for many additional years.
